What makes our honey special?

Unique Cures Active Manuka Honey is:

  • Manuka Honey Sourced from a single estate in the far north of New Zealand. This area consistently produces some of the best Active Manuka Honey in New Zealand. It is not a multi-site blend like some makers of Manuka honey.
  • 100% Active Manuka Honey. It does not contain any other honey such as clover honey, which is often used to reduce the cost of production at the expense of flavor, and many producers do not disclose this fact to you. With Unique Cures, you are buying 100% pure Active Manuka Honey.
  • Produced by Bruce Moffat, an expert beekeeper who takes a personal mission not only to deliver the best Active Manuka Honey to you, but also maintaining the welfare of his teams of bees.

Our honey is 100% raw natural honey with only pure Active Manuka Honey being used, straight from the hive. There is no mix of other honey blends, so what it says on the label is exactly what you are buying, 100% Pure Active 7+ Manuka Honey.

Please note that our honey may have become hard in the container due to temperature. However, if you leave it in a warm place or in the sun, the honey will soon soften. The rule to remember with honey is use heat to soften, refrigerate to harden.

What kinds of bacteria can Manuka Honey protect you against?

The antimicrobial activity of Manuka Honey has been observed in many studies around the world. It has been discovered that Manuka Honey is effective in destroying the following bacterial and fungal microorganisms:

Escherichia coli (E. coli), Staphylococcus aureus (Staph infections), Salmonella typhimurium, Streptococcus faecalis, Streptococcus pyogenes, Helicobacter Pylori (H. pylori, stomach ulcers) Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Vanocomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE)

There has also been research that shows Manuka Honey obstructs the enzyme called cysteine protease. Please see this link for further information regarding the activity of Manuka honey.

How is Manuka Honey different from standard honey?

Standard honey has been used in the past to heal wounds, primarily due to the fact that it keeps the wound moist and nurtures the growth of new tissue with important vitamins and amino acids. Honey also contains hydrogen peroxide which is a known antiseptic. However, Manuka Honey has special plant-derived components that is unique to Manuka (such as UMF and methylglyoxal) that give it added healing properties not found in other types of honey. Manuka Honey is also very stable so there is no concern of it losing its potency or healing properties when diluted.

Active Manuka honey differs from normal honey because of the additional existence of non-peroxide antibacterial activity (The Unique Manuka Factor, UMF). The enzyme that produces hydrogen peroxide (a natural antibacterial agent) in honey is destroyed when honey is exposed to heat or light. The non-peroxide antibacterial activity in Manuka honey however, is stable so there is no concern about losing its healing properties in storage.

  1. Only Active Manuka Honey provides non-hydrogen peroxide antibacterial components.
  2. Active Manuka Honey's antibacterial factor is unaffected by enzymes in the body that destroy hydrogen peroxide components.
  3. Active Manuka Honey is highly effective against antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria (such as MRSA and VRE).
  4. Active Manuka Honey maintains its potency even when diluted over 50 times.
  5. ActiveManuka Honey diffuses deep into skin tissue, making it possible to get to effected areas.

Personal note from the beekeeper, Bruce Moffat

Bruce Moffat Obviously I have a personal love for Manuka honey in its natural state, and never eat any other honey. I have had many people come to me and call me and say that my honey is the best they have ever eaten, and even some calls from people who have been in the beekeeping business for many years.

For my local market, my strongest selling point is that it is as natural as you can get. The honey in the jar is the same as the honey direct from the hive and from the bees. We take the honey comb, spin it to generate centrifugal forces which extract the honey naturally without heat, and we bottle it directly.
